MUNICH (Thomson Financial) -- BMW will decide this year on an ecologically compatible car for the U.S. market -- which is likely to be battery powered -- CEO Norbert Reithofer said.

The subject of discussion is the question whether to manufacture the car alone or in cooperation with a partner, Reithofer told auto motor und sport.

According to Reithofer, BMW will be considered a so-called large vehicle manufacturer in the U.S. from 2012, obliged to offer an ecologically compatible car.

19 Mar 08, FINANCIAL TIMES, Richard Milne (Summary) GERMANY --- BMW is considering building an electric car as well as a number of new models for megacities as the world’s biggest luxury carmaker tries to boost its environmentally-friendly offering. The German company will make a decision on the electric car this year after concluding it was technically possible. It has also set up a group – Project i – to examine what cars and services it needs for people living in very large cities and that could lead to the creation of a fourth brand alongside BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce. BMW has already taken a lead in environmental matters with its so-called Efficient Dynamics programme. But this has led to higher development costs, and lower margins compared with Mercedes-Benz and Audi, its main competitors. BMW said it had lost €517m ($816m) last year because of currency issues, particularly with the dollar and the yen. But that figure was below the €666m recorded in 2006 and BMW said it would fall further in the year to under €400m. Norbert Reithofer, BMW’s chief executive, said the carmaker was forecasting further rises in sales and profit this year to new record levels in spite of “massive challenges”. He said the X6, a cross between an SUV and coupé that has been heavily criticised by some experts, was sold out for the next four-and-a-half months. He also criticised the European Commission’s plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and said the car industry was being penalised at a rate 23 times higher than other sectors.
